Ozempic

Ozempic was approved in 2017 by the FDA for use in adults with type 2 diabetes, and the active ingredient in Ozempic, Semaglutide was approved by the FDA in 2021 for chronic weight management under the brand name Wegovy.

Semaglutide is a weekly injection that helps lower blood sugar by helping the pancreas make more insulin. It works by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone. As those hormone levels rise, the molecules go to your brain, telling it you’re full. It also slows digestion by increasing the time it takes for food to leave the body.

An early study of 2,000 obese adults compared people using Semaglutide plus a diet and exercise program with people who made the same lifestyle changes without Semaglutide.

After 68 weeks, half of the participants using Semaglutide lost 15% of their body weight, and nearly a third lost 20%. Participants who incorporated only lifestyle changes lost about 2.4% of their weight.

Mounjaro

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) was FDA-approved in 2022 for managing type 2 diabetes, and in 2023, the FDA approved Mounjaro for chronic weight management in overweight and obese adults. This approval is in addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

The weekly injection mimics two digestive hormones that are naturally secreted by the intestines after a meal, resulting in lower blood sugar. It also reduces appetite by slowing down the time it takes the stomach to empty. Instead of counting calories, the medicine helps a person eat less because it signals to the brain that you’re full.

A 72-week study showed that participants who used Tirzepatide along with lifestyle changes lost 20% of their body weight, and people who stayed on it longer lost 25%, as opposed to a placebo group who lost 3.8%.
